It was the perfect Utah evening with a bright sky and beautiful "stars" out for Utah's 2011 Entertainment & Choice Awards show at the Salt Palace on Friday night.  The highly anticipated event began with a star-studded red carpet "meet and greet" covered by Utah's best in entertainment journalism.

The red carpet was a beautiful sight....stars like David Archuleta, Debbie Gibson, Daniel Bernhardt, Miss Utah USA...all seen here as they interview with Utah's entertainment media and photographers.

On Entertainment, part of Time Warner network, was on the red carpet covering the event.  Hostess Melinda Ann Prince seen here interviewing Utah pro skater, Kevin Fedderson, who was recently signed to the Dew Tour.

Miss Utah USA, Jamie Crandall, welcomes host for Utah's 2011 ECA's, celebrity actor Daniel Bernhardt, featured in the popular film, The Matrix Reloaded.  Miss Crandall will be representing the state next month at the MISS USA 2011 pageant to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 19th.  Best wishes Jamie!

Entertainment journalist for THE UNLIMITED, Mateo Coletti speaks with Daniel Bernhardt on his feelings about hosting the first "red carpet" event in Utah.  Feeling honored to be host, Daniel also feels this event will have a positive impact on the entertainment industry in Utah.

Bernhardt thinks Utah is a wonderful place to shoot movies and revealed to us that he has  "...quite a few projects coming up and (he is) trying to focus the producer's attention to the many different landscapes and possibilities Utah has to offer when filming..." he explained.

TU Host, Mateo speaks with American Idol (Season 7) star, David Archuleta, about his experience getting his music and voice into the "limelight".  Archuleta says, "It was amazing that the opportunity presented itself the way that it did.  It allowed me to jump into the national music scene in a way I never thought I could."

When asked what might be next in his career he went on to explain that he's about to move to Nashville to start work on a new project that he's really excited about.  Good luck David and thank you for representing Utah's music scene!

Looking gorgeous in gold, Debbie Gibson, celebrity recording artist and actress, graced the red carpet and spent some time speaking with Mateo of The Unlimited.  Debbie was excited for the event and happy to be a special guest of the Osmond family, Utah's most well-known music talents.

On the event, Debbie says "I think this is a great accomplishment for Utah's entertainment industry.  I'm good friends with Donny and Marie and have been noticing the growth in Utah's creative community for quite some time."  Mateo Coletti explains, "Debbie Gibson is such a wonderful person, down-to-earth and gracious to her fans and the media."

Long-time Utah media icon, Dick Nourse, speaks with Rachael of TU about the excitement surrounding this "first" red carpet event in Utah.  As an award-winning journalist, Nourse has observed the media community in Utah for many years and is excited about where the entertainment industry is headed and the exciting opportunities that lay ahead for Utah.

Utah will be getting its first taste of Hollywood on May 20^th with Utah’s 2011 Entertainment and Choice Awards show being held at the Salt Palace in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. This event spotlights businesses and individuals who have vastly contributed to Utah's entertainment, arts and media community. 

The Entertainment and Choice Awards (ECA) show is a red carpet event hosted by Daniel Bernhardt, featured actor from the popular film series, The Matrix, and featuring special presenters for the evening, Donny Osmond and David Archuleta (American Idol).  Among the many featured celebrity presenters, there will also be a “surprise” presenter who will be announced by the news media on the day of the event.

Being the first of its kind for the state, the awards show features local celebrity presenters as well, like Tim Hughes and Sue Kelley.  Many celebrity guests are expected to appear, such as recording artists Debbie Gibson and David Osmond, comedian and TV host Louie Anderson, Utah media icon Dick Nourse, sports sensation “Jimmer” Fredette, Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello, “Miss Utah”…and the list keeps on growing. 

Produced by Telly Award winner, Doug Osmond, and with Utah Entertainment & Choice Awards nominees, a “surprise” musical guest and featured performers like Brett Turner, Marc Stefano and Jason Hewlett in attendance… this awards show is certain to help shape the future of the entertainment industry in Utah.

With information on each and every nominee all in one place, this article is your “who’s who” guide to the 2011 entertainment awards.  The event’s OFFICIAL website provides more background, the performance schedule, promo videos, info about the venue and more.

Choice in Entertainment Broadcasting Award

(Radio Content)

There are five nominees in this category.  KBER 101 with Mick & Allen is an afternoon weekday rock show, self-titled the “Freak Show” where hosts get real with radio listeners and also raise money and awareness for special causes. 

Next, we have the Outdoor Adventure Show is a Utah travel and adventure pod cast out of Ogden, which gives listeners inside information on local terrain in addition to local, national and international industry news and relevant stories on outdoor activities in Utah and abroad. 

The third nominee is The Morning Zoo on 97.1 FM with Frankie, Dangerboy and Jessica.  These hosts have been on the air for many years and are always giving away free music, tickets and lots of Hollywood gossip to their radio listeners, as well as raising funds and awareness for worthy causes. 

Radio From Hell on X96 FM is the fourth nominee.  A station with many loyal fans, this show may just be “Salt Lake City’s longest running morning show” for radio audiences in the valley. 

The fifth nominee is The Stubbs Show on 101.5 The Eagle, featuring stand-up comedian and self-proclaimed “family man”, Keith Stubbs.

Choice in Film Award

(Video Production)

There are six nominees in this category.  The first nominee is Richard Dutcher, an independent filmmaker who once “fathered” LDS-based films and has now launched his own film distribution company.  He continues to explore universal ideas in his projects.

Solar Shock Studios, the second nominee, has produced and released 17 award-winning short films and supports the Independent Film Society here in Utah that helps to promote local filmmaking arts. 

The third nominee, Kurt Hale, is the founder of the Hale Center Theatre and HaleStorm Entertainment, a film production and distribution company based in Provo, specializing in children’s and family entertainment. 

Dark Sun Studios, the fourth nominee in this category, is a full-service motion picture studio based in Ogden, with a creative team who has produced projects for HBO, Disney and other major networks. 

The fifth nominee, Gary Cook, is a long-time filmmaker for the LDS church, who has produced many highly regarded projects and recently entered early-retirement, due to health concerns. 

Ryan Little, the sixth nominee, has won many awards in the directing field, mostly in the LDS arena with titles such as “Singles Ward” and “Saints and Soldiers”; he is also the co-founder of Go Films.

Choice in Media Award

(Television Programming)

The first nominee, Fox 13 “Good Day Utah”, is a weekday morning show which helps you enjoy your morning routine with “perky” updates on news and weather, while always keeping an informative but light-hearted approach to the “super-morning”.

KSL Studio 5 gives an in-depth look into the local Utah lifestyle; designed to improve relationships and presenting creative solutions to help family and community life.  This program has a wide audience and is comparable to morning shows out of NYC or LA.

Park City Television is the third nominee.  PCTV is unique; it is not only a local award-winning TV station, but a bridge between local, national and international audiences, like during their overarching coverage of the Sundance Film Festival each year.  PCTV strives to support local community, business and the arts and is always keeping the “good” of the community in mind as they design their programming. 

The fourth nominee, ABC4 “Good Things Utah”, is a lively morning show, comparable to “The View”.  After witnessing their live broadcast in person, there are only “good things” to say about this program. Completely professional and a joy to work with, the ladies of “GTU” are not only flawless hosts, but invested journalists who always make their guests feel at “home” in their cozy living room set at ABC4 studios.

 Choice in Print Media

(News Publications)

Salt Lake City Magazine, the first nominee, is celebrating its 20^th year covering Utah news, fashion, people and food.  The print and online publication has been recognized for numerous industry awards for editorials, design and sales. 

The second nominee, Utah Valley Magazine, is a magazine for those who work in, live in, or love the Utah valley.  In their ninth year of highlighting homes, lifestyles and interesting people, the publication also features achievements of community residents and local contests. 

In This Week Magazine, the third nominee, is new on the “scene” and depicts a modern portrayal of Salt Lake City life, with its finger on the pulse of the modern urban community.  This publication consciously includes local residents in their content.

Salt Lake City Weekly, the fourth nominee, was founded by John Saltas and is the longest-running independent, local print publication with a “private eye” on Utah politics, spirituality, lifestyles, local music, media and the arts, people stories and the subsequent controversial issues that follow.  In addition to being “THE” source for urban nightlife, arts and media, the Salt Lake City Weekly has won so many awards it’s not even funny… and in turn they created the prominent annual “Best of Utah” awards, presented to locally-minded business owners and “indie” retailers, all chosen by CW readers.

Choice in Community Award

(Community Leadership)

The first nominee, Elizabeth (Tibby) Milne, is the Executive Director of the Utah Council for Crime Prevention (UCCP) in Salt Lake City.  In 1982, she launched a program to provide safe havens for children. 

Ken Foster is an extraordinary musical performer and instructor listed with the MTNA and UMTA, who has written and produced music for PBS, Legacy West and Primetime Access.  Foster is also an active pianist, performing with artists such as Donny and Marie. 

The Sally Bytheway Chorale, the third nominee in this category, founded in 2005, is a veteran group of contemporary vocalists who guest perform around the valley at prestigious venues, singing a variety of musical styles and always giving back to the community through their gift of music.

Choice in Future Award

(Fortitude for Achievement)

The first nominee, Amanda Chamberlain, is an on-air contributor and producer of “Fresh Living”, an afternoon show on KUTV 2 News.  A young, “fresh” communications graduate from the University of Utah, she has won many Utah journalism awards and aspires to become a full-time TV personality who promotes humanitarianism.

Tom "Chef Tom" Woodbury, the second nominee, is the prime culinary contributor on ABC4’s “Good Things Utah” morning show.  Working closely with the producers of the Cooking Channel, he has had an opportunity to create a pilot for a potential TV cooking series, which would make him Utah’s first celebrity chef. 

Kels Goodman is the director of the upcoming film, “The Last Eagle Scout” and winner of the 2008 Clio Viral video campaign of the year.  He has produced many feature films.

The fourth nominee, Deena Marie, is a young actress, model and social media guru.  Deena’s YouTube web show, which she writes, performs and edits all herself, has gained a lot of online attention, including plays on MTV.  In addition to having over 43,000 subscribers on her online channel, she is also works on projects as a partner with Salt Lake City Weekly and has studied at Atlantic Theater Company. 

Those are Utah’s entertainment nominees for 2011!

In hopes that this will become an annual red carpet affair for Utah, perhaps next year the entertainment awards ballot will be expanded to include a “Choice in Music Award” (for Music Production) and a “Choice in Music Performance Award” (for Best Utah Music Artist) to celebrate the local music talent, bands and musicians in Utah as well.
